Abstract
Transient polydipsia and polyuria during pregnancy are rare, and their cause is not entirely clear. Possible explanations are that the exacerbation of preexisting abnormalities in the secretion or action of vasopressin because of altered osmotic
thresholds for vasopressin and thirst, an increase rate of vasopressin disposal due to abnormally increased plasma vasopressinase activity and diminished renal responsiveness to vasopressin during pregnancy.
We recently experienced 2 cases of vasopressin-sensitive diabetes insipidus late pregnancy and immediate puerperium and subsided spontaneously after pregnancy. Each patient experienced severe thirst and polyuria during the third trimester and
immediate
postpartum. It may become apparent clinically during pregnancy in patient with underlying defect on vasopressin secretion such as partial neurogenic diabetes insipidus. (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 7 : 384 ~ 390, 1992)
